Humankind has always sorted out reality altering experiences. We sought our the deepest darkest places to alter our perceptions, to seek the inner meaning of what it meant to be a self-conscious animal. Sensory depravation and rhythmic dance helped us create the first art, symbols, and the magic of metaphor and symbolic exchange.
First we left simple symbols of our presence. Overtime our cave art became more complex, it came to represent a magical composite of nature, and inner human consciousness. We left our magical marks on reality until everything we came to know as real was in fact based on humankind’s capacity to create illusions rooted in a hallucinatory experience.
As societies grew and settled the lands, small groups of our ancestors continued to seek out mind altering experiences in the deepest recesses of the earth. They became known as The Mystery Cults. In the ancient world, Mystery Cults, and their practice of taking journeys to the inner-self, became the basis for the fundamental values of our culture and civilization.
The Mystery Cults influenced the very myths and religions that formed the stories we. told ourselves about our own lives and relationship with nature. Mystery Cults kept alive the teaching of the ancient world that espoused the one-ness of humanity and the natural world.
In the classical world of Greece, and Rome Mystery Cults continued to flourish. They formed temples such as at Eleusis where they held annual festivals in the honour of Demeter and Persephone. They vowed to preserve the ancient secrets that now form the very values we cherish in our modern lives and occidental culture.
In the 1950’s, Albert Hofmann, chemist and discoverer of LSD, identified psychedelic experiences as the principal method of the Ancient Mystery Cults to inner consciousness. Hofmann himself became obsessed with the search for the sacred inner knowledge of the human psyche.
Ever since Hofmann’s discovery of LSD more and more psychonauts from across the globe have been embarking on their journey to the inside. They have become the new seekers of truth and light in search of the treasure buried in our experience of nature.
